Lenno is an amazing village situated on the western shore of lake Como in the town of Tremezzina. It’s a place in a quiet and authentic enviroment that offers to visitors a mix of nature, history and culture.

History

Lenno has ancient origins with testimonies from romanic and medieval time. The most important religious building of the town is the “Collegiata di Santo Stefano” dating back to the 11th century, which preserves renaissance frescoes made by Bernardino Luini.

Another important historical place is the “Abbazia dell’AcquaFredda”, built in the 12th century and reachable by a path which passes through olive trees. The church is decorated with paintings, one of which is attribuited to the painter known as “Il Fiammingo”.

Nature and Landscape

Lenno offers numerous scenic trails, ideal for nature lovers. One of the most distinctive paths leads to the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring frescoed chapels and stunning views of the lake.

Beaches

Lenno also has several beaches, including the Lido di Lenno, a beach resort that offers sunbeds, umbrellas, and a lakeside restaurant.

Villa del Balbianello

One of Lenno’s main attractions is Villa del Balbianello, located at the tip of the Lavedo peninsula.

Overlooking the promontory, the villa is arguably the most famous on Lake Como. Completed at the end of the 18th century, it has been owned by nobles and adventurers, including Guido Monzino, an explorer and collector.

The villa is also renowned for its meticulously maintained gardens and for being a filming location for movies such as Star Wars: Episode II and Casino Royale.

Today, it is managed by the FAI (Italian National Trust) and can also be visited via boat tours.

Events

Despite its small size, Lenno keeps many traditions alive. In the summer, the Festa del Lago (Lake Festival) takes place, featuring music, fireworks, and craft markets. The weekly market along the lakeside is popular for its local products and culinary specialties.

Gastronomy

In the Lenno area it is possible to eat the typical dishes of Como region, like risotto with perch, missoltini and tóch, a rich dish made with polenta, butter and cheese. Numerous lakeside restaurants offer traditional dishes accompained by Lombard wines.

How to Get There

Lenno is easily accessible by car or ferry, thanks to connections with towns around the lake. The boat trip on Lake Como is particularly scenic, especially when departing from Bellagio, Varenna, or the city of Como.
