Ontano Beach, located in the south of Colico, is one of the most amazing places of Lake Como, mostly for those for who love nature and green areas. Its name comes from a big black alder (alnus glutinosa) , a tree that grows near lakes and rivers. Due to its wood, the tree has become water resistant, when it is underwater, even if it’s subject to erosion in the open air. For this reason it’s been used since antiquity to build stiles or foundations like Venice, where many buildings still rest on the poles of black alder.

The beach extends for 300/400 meters along the shore, it is characterized by ample meadows that offer big spaces, perfect for relaxing or doing outdoor sports. The access to the lake is facilitated by a strip of fine sand, mixed with gravel that allows a gradual entry into the water, suitable even for those who are not very comfortable in swimming. The beach is also partially fenced by a camping area. Inside the area, there is the “L’Ontano” bar and restaurant. There are toilets available, and you can rent sunbeds and deck chairs to fully enjoy the day. However, there is no playground for children, and boats are not allowed to dock on this part of the beach.

Ontano beach is also great for water sports and outdoor activities, such as:

• Windsurfing and Kitesurfing:
Thanks to a wind called “la Breva,” which blows in the afternoon, this is a great place to do windsurfing or kitesurfing. These sports are very popular in summer, when the weather is nice and the wind is steady.

• SUP and Kayaking:
In the morning, when the water is calm, it’s a good time to do stand up paddle (SUP) or kayaking. From Ontano, you can follow the coast or calmly explore the beginning of the Adda river mouth.

• Cycling and Walking:
From Ontano you can reach Valtellina through a flat and scenic path, perfect for biking or walking. It’s great for a family walk or a run surrounded by nature. Ontano beach is less crowded than other beaches in Colico, so it’s a nice place to read, do yoga, or just enjoy the view of the lake and mountains.

About fifteen minutes by foot from Ontano, following a part of the Valtellina Trail, you reach the “Wild Beach,” which has no buildings or facilities. It is located between the Adda river mouth and the Montecchio Nord hill, which was once important for military reasons. This sandy beach, surrounded by reeds and wetlands, is part of the Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve. It is one of the most important areas in northern Italy for migratory birds. It’s a perfect place for birdwatching, nature photography, or just relaxing in peace, away from crowds and noise.
