The Addio monti is a passage from chapter eight of The Betrothed written by Alessandro Manzoni. Here Manzoni reports Lucia’s thoughts while she is leaving, sadly, on a boat, her beloved country.
She turns her farewell especially to the mountains, compared to the faces of her dear acquaintances, to streams that remember the sound of her friend’s voice, to the scattered villas, to the church where she was to be married, at her native house and the house of her betrothed, Renzo. The stone is located at the ancient mouth of the Bione

THE TEXT
“Farewell mounts, mouth of waters, and elevated to sky; peaks unequal, notes to those who grew up among you, and impressed in their mind: streams from which are distinguished roar, like the sound of familiar voices. White villas located on the mountains, like flocks of sheep.
How sad is the step of those who go! To the imagination of the one who goes away with the hope of finding fortune: He was astonished that he had made a decision and would turn back, if he didn’t think that one day he would return rich. The air seems heavy and dead he goes into the turbulent cities: it
seems that the houses bloom in the streets and they take his breath away. In front of the buildings, watched by the stranger, he thinks about the camp of his country, to whom he has already set his eyes, and he will buy back to his mountains”
